A Better MSDS Filing with MSDS Binders

msds-binderYou may handle hundreds of Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) inside your chemical plant. This is as the consequence of using hundreds of hazardous chemicals for the production process. All the MSDS should be managed properly; otherwise you and your workers could be in danger when handling these hazardous chemicals.

Proper management of MSDS means making those MSDS available at the points of use. They are usually used in areas of incoming inspection, production, warehouse, laboratory, etc. And the existence of MSDS binders could greatly help creating proper management of MSDS. (more…)

Tips for Better Lab Safety Supplies Management

lab-safety-suppliesSuccess in managing lab safety supplies will directly affect the performance of safety in laboratory operation as a whole. Laboratory, which contains various hazardous chemicals, pressurized gases, flammable gases and electrical energy, if not properly managed, could present harmful working condition to workers.

Better lab safety supplies management will not only ensure the availability of safety supplies, but also could ensure all workers who work inside the laboratory are protected from potential hazards.

Read the simple tips below for having better lab safety supplies management within your chemical plant. (more…)

Xylene MSDS Download

Xylene is an organic substance that is toxic to blood, nervous system, kidney and liver. Xylene is flammable liquid with flash point 25oC (closed cup). It can be explosive in the form of vapor when is exposed to open flame, spark or heat.

msds-xyleneXylene is generally used as solvent, paint thinner and cleaning agent. Rubber and leather industries are examples of industry that use xylene in their production processes.

Special safety precautions shall be given in case of its handling and storage. All ignition and heat sources have to be kept away from xylene storage. And all equipments containing xylene have to be grounded. Meanwhile, in laboratory, xylene has to be stored in flammable safety storage cabinet. (more…)

Most Noticeable Lab Safety Equipment

Lab safety equipment is an integrated part of the whole safety system equipments in every chemical plant. Lab safety equipment is provided in order to avoid lab accidents, reduce hazard (chemical, physical and biological) exposure and etc.

lab-safetyVarious analytical works are carried out in laboratory everyday, which involve the use many hazardous chemicals or hazmat. As the consequences, many potential hazards are possible to happen in the laboratory, such as chemical spills, worker exposure to toxic gases, explosion, fire and electric shock.

So that’s why lab safety equipment plays an important role in accident prevention inside the laboratory. It can save workers from death and injuries, and keep your accident statistic remain zero.

Then, what types of lab safety equipment do you have to provide? Here is the list. (more…)

MSDS Potassium Permanganate (KMnO4)

Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) is commonly found in chemical plant, especially in laboratory. Potassium permanganate is one of the most common chemical reagents for analysis purposes.

msds-kmn04It is a strong oxidizer, which is also used in the field of disinfectant, water treatment, biomedical and production of organic substances like ascorbic acid and saccharin.

It is non-flammable material. However, as a strong oxidizer, potassium permanganate can cause an explosion when contacts with oxidizable materials. (more…)

Writing MSDS Using MSDS Template

Managing many chemicals inside chemical plant is a regular job for safety officers, safety representatives or safety in charges. It means that at the same time they have to manage many MSDS.

MSDS-templateManaging MSDS of chemicals covers such jobs as writing MSDS, distributing, filing, updating and revising. Writing MSDS may be the most complicated job among them. Even, if they have to prepare those MSDS from a blank sheet.

Writing MSDS using MSDS template can be very helpful. It makes the MSDS writing process simpler and requires shorter time to finish. (more…)

List of Safety Precautions for Shutdown Activities of Chemical Plants

safety precautions for shutdown activities of chemical plantsThere are two kinds of chemical plant shut down, i.e. planned shutdown and emergency or unplanned shutdown. An example of planned shutdown is as preparation for Turn Around or yearly preventive maintenance programs. Emergency plant shutdown can be triggered by many factors, such like electric power failure, machinery failure, instrumentation trouble and many more.

In both shutdown cases, there are safety precautions for shutdown activities of chemical plants that need to be taken into account. Such safety precautions are required to prevent potential hazards that commonly appear during plant shut down.

In fact, many people may underestimate chemical plant safety in shutdown condition. Of course there may no pumps running, no reactions occur or production process. But various potential hazards such as over pressure, fire and explosion still exist, which could present real danger to the plant and people inside it. (more…)
